Leading by Example: Rohingya Crisis

Note: The idea behind “Leading By Example” project is to offer a donation whenever I can to a charity, not-for-profit organization, or person of my choice. This program is designed to provide an example to everyone about how to offer charity regularly. Whether this task is conducted on monthly or yearly basis really depends on where you are in your career or how much struggle you are up against. But, even then the donations should be routinely provided through this method─remember, even a warm smile is considered a donation because it improves the minds. Kindly follow my footsteps to lead the rest.

Rohingya Muslims are one of the most persecuted minority group in this world. They have been receiving abuse like torture, rape, and murder from the Myanmar Security forces since 1970s. The most recent Rohingya crisis has changed into a Global Humanitarian issue as more than half a million Rohingya refugees fled from Myanmar.

The current Myanmar Leader, Aung San Suu Kyi who is a Noble Peace Prize winner, has received lots of criticism about how she is handling this particular crisis. I think she is tending towards Sociopathy, which can sometimes happen to some Buddhists.  This is why she can be at peace (feel less guilt and fear) and deliver speeches about Human Rights while so many of the Myanmar Rohingyas are getting butchered. Why was she given a Noble Peace Prize at all?

I have just donated some money to UNICEF, which is a very well known and efficient Canadian charity.  Please help the Rohingya because their leaders have failed to take their responsibility.

In 2002, I won the Certificate of Appreciation from the University of Toronto because I chose to volunteer for the AccessAbility Services. Oh! I had no idea that I was going to get awarded; I was just doing my thang. I took a heavy task because other people were definitely going to avoid it. My job was to push a disabled man’s wheelchair─he was kind of heavy. I had to push it every assigned day for 25 minutes from the North Building to the South Building and then another 25 minutes from the South Building to the North Building; I had to help the man get to the washroom and then drop him to his classroom; and then I had to go to my classes. I used to feel so relieved after finishing these tasks. He used to thank me in a generous manner, and I used to cheer up every time he would communicate. Life felt good that way!

Arthritis is a complicated disease because its tough to realize what it is doing to the patient unless you have seen a patient up close. I learned about this disease because one of my relatives had Arthritis. Over years, I saw her feet become malformed and twisted; I still kind of break down when I sometimes see her crying for help while walking. Her condition inspired me to raise funds by canvassing my neighborhood for The Arthritis Society. I did this once in 2002; and I had to back out after I realized that my feet started aching like hell. Next time, I will just donate to them.

I fed a homeless man tonight—homeless people are one of my weaknesses. I happened to stop at a Tim Hortons to pick up some snacks and coffee when I saw a homeless man standing near the entrance. It was easy for me to guess that he was homeless although I have just very brief exposure to the homeless. I instantly realized that he needed help because he was looking down and shifting on his feet, both of his hands were in his pockets, and he was unclean.

I usually feed them by using my hard-earned savings or lunch money —I eat less on those days. But, today I wanted to walk away because I was too tired—I had just finished my job and I needed to fall asleep. As soon as I started walking towards my car, my heart started twisting due to emotional turmoil. It was a weird feeling as if someone was holding my heart in his/her hands and then pressing it really hard. I experienced lots of pain so I just turned around and asked him to come inside Tim Hortons. Then, I requested him to order some food for himself. I stood there all the while making sure that he gets the food in his hands. I don’t trust anyone when it comes to the homeless; I mean what if the server’s answer was, “Shoo, shoo. Go away! The lady who ordered this food is gone and so should you.” I was a little surprised when he felt dignified enough to sit inside the warm Tim Hortons to eat this meager dinner─he had painstakingly ordered a large sandwich, large coffee, and a muffin. After this, I started feeling peaceful and the pain that I had felt in my heart slowly disappeared. Experiencing life through the eyes of homeless or seeing them lying on streets is one of the toughest things I have done in my entire life.

I have seen, met, helped, and talked with several homeless who are scattered all over my region. Besides my cash, I have donated food items and clothing to charities that are dedicated to the homeless─one of my favourite charities is “Straight to the Streets”. I have also given these destitute individuals cards that provide a Hotline for the homeless. It wasn’t easy distributing these on my own and without a team─working without a team is easier given than one has a busy schedule.

I feel that there is less help out there for them. I mean if I give them $20 for food, then that will cover only food for one day. Then there are expenses for clothing, hygiene, shelter, and job training. Who is going to cover for that? (Sighs!) Every time, I walk away after helping them, I am left with huge regret because I know that I haven’t done enough for them.

I am leaving a note here in hope that people will be inspired by the example I have set and help their local homeless. Feel free to compete with me in this; i.e., if you can. I dare you to win this competition, boys and gals. (winks and laughs demonically, “Muhahahaha!)

Cheers and Sweet Dreams!

We Are Fractals” is a writing group that is designed specifically for the women. Since, I have been running the Buddy Program for some years now, I know some challenges Canadian women are facing.

Currently, the We Are Fractals team has two writers and one painter─all of their content is being protected with the help of a legal agreement. We will start out by creating creative pieces like short stories, poetry, or novels together. We will choose and design our curriculum, train each other, and use Google Docs for collaboration. We will publish our collaborative pieces and gain recognition together. The mission is to create several pieces, especially short stories on women abuse, misogyny, and cultural thoughts and beliefs. This is how we will guarantee to construct a safe space for women who are handling physical, domestic, or financial issues.

The inspiration behind this project is drawn from three core ideas: talented female authors like JK Rowling are strategically being discouraged and blocked from publishing early; small presses are helping more women enter the world of publishing so that they may reverse a trend that’s keeping talented women bare of experiences and monetary gain; and Obama’s female staffers could make their voices heard only after they amplified each other’s response.

I hope to provide an excellent example to everyone; and I hope to make a difference in the lives of the women.

I just ran the “buddy program” session with an abused woman. I believe that everyone should verse themselves in preventing domestic abuse. I do this by making functional connections either with reliable lawyers, therapists, social or community workers, colleagues, or friends; being willing to submit independent and necessary commentary, like thoughts on recent attempt to commit suicide, to the authorities or anyone else who are working on that particular case; learning relevant literature including emergency exit plansemotional abuse assessment guides, and suicide prevention; developing an understanding of the possible moves the abuser(s) might end up making; understanding the culture and belief system of the victim(s); emailing helpful information; and, participating in the separation, divorce, or emergency exit process. You must do this according to your mental and physical abilities and budget. For instance, you can start building a lobby slowly by connecting with one professional at a time; gaining experience in lucid dreaming by helping men/women you somehow feel connected to; acquiring knowledge of the Abnormal Psychology (Regeneration and What is Abnormal Psychology); learning how to maintain confidentiality; and requesting another expert to intervene when the victims become too scared, agitated, and shaken.

There are couple of things you have to know before you decide to play the buddy:

  • Only work for women who feel that they can somehow trust you with their personal information.
  • Know when to stay quiet so that the victim may have sufficient time to absorb her trauma and then react properly.
  • Know that you won’t be able to pull each victim out of their situation because sometimes they have to live with their abuser(s) due to lack of money or job.
  • Do not sit there and judge the woman you are working with; she might be temporarily feeling down or acting rashly because her abuser(s) don’t let her breath, grant sufficient space, and figure things out.
  • Connect with men who know about woman abuse and how to handle it. They can help you understand the situation at hand or give you good contacts to work with. Speak only to men who have some sort of training to handle such situations; who are on the same page with you; or who have previous experience handling traumatized women─this is tricky because men who are playing it nice but don’t know what to do will get you into deeper trouble instead of walking you through all of this. Furthermore, men know better about the psychology of men. For instance, my male doctor who knows that I volunteer for abused women advised me that men who are acting harshly towards a victim might be planning to sexually assault her and force her to become dependent on them. Don’t just sit there and ignore men simply because the person who has been attacking your buddy is a man.
  • Be part of an existing support system so you may constantly extract knowledge from their resources.
  • Learn to draw a boundary somewhere. Sometimes, the victim(s) might be very injured and thus unable to decide what’s better for them. That’s when you have to decide what’s better for them and help them navigate. Other times, you might end up with a completely uneducated and angry woman who needs help. Look at your comfort zone and then decide if you wish to help; and also decide when you need to stop helping out and move on with your life.
  • Create your “Safety Tips” list, which should list the most critical points you want to bring up while advising a victim of abuse or someone who is willing to learn how to help them out. Here is a sample list that I created.

This system really works well on its own due to contributions by only some people. For example, I used this system to help an abused woman get a job and another woman her driving license. Its easy to play this system even if you are planning to hide from your abusers and the general population.

I am thinking back to one of my lucid dreams now. Perhaps, it was a spiritual quest that’s indicating that citizens must participate in protecting each other from domestic abuse. I mean I learned whatever I know about how to handle and manage women abuse after I saw this dream.
