Performance at UTM’s “SpeakOut Poetry”

Nov 20, 2009

Note: It didn’t come out as well as I wanted it to but feels nice to listen to myself. Kind of comforting!

The recording isn’t complete. At the beginning, I told everyone that I will be using a literary reference/allusion at the end, “Sea is History”, which is from Dereck Walcott’s poem “Sea is History”. I must comment that I am in the process of learning. At the time, I wrote and performed this poem, I hadn’t fully learned how to write a literary reference/allusion. I knew less at that time. For instance, it is okay to refer to some extent like two or three words (see definition of Allusion offered by Poetry Foundation) ; and, it is okay to use some phrases as long as everything is properly referenced (see definition of Allusion from Poetry Invoice).

Also, the video was done very unprofessionally. My pretty slim figure has been changed into an obese one! Anyways, its worth listening to it though. 🙂

This is my first poetry competition. I am hoping that this experience will teach me to grow and develop myself as a poet. Make sure to ROOT 4 ME, PLZ. Phase 2 and 3 of the competition require 50% input from the audience.

Everyone, please come to the competition and enjoy some thought-provoking and inspiring poetry.

Date: Nov-20-Friday.
Time: 6:00 pm -10:00 pm
Location:
University of Toronto, Mississauga
3359 Mississauga Road N.
SB Rm. 2072

Rules of the Competition:

According to Speak Out, this competition will be in 3 phases. See the quote below:

Phase 1: All accepted participants will have 3 mins to perform 1 of the 3 poems they sent in. After 3 minutes and 10 seconds, marks will be deducted. 3 Judges will give you marks for performance and content. The 6 with the highest marks will proceed to phase 2. There are currently 13 poets to perform in this phase.

Phase 2: The 6 participants will perform a second poem of their choice from the 3 they sent in.The judges will give you marks for the performance and content, and the audience will have polls to choose their top poets. Total marks will then be based 50% on marks given by judges and 50% based on the audience’s vote. 4 out of the 6 poets will proceed to phase 3.

Phase 3: The 4 poets chosen by the audience in phase 2 will perform a third poem. This 3rd poem maybe the remaining one from those you sent in for the application, or a different poem that you feel is more suitable for this stage. The audience will have polls, and will vote again. Based on the number of votes, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be determined.

Publications at Writer’s Forum

Most recently, I have joined Writer’s Forum-an online platform for writers that allows online communication between authors and readers besides showcasing works of several talented authors.

Here is an introduction that they published about me.

Two of my poems, “Gem and Gem Collectors” and “Knock Knock” have also been published.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Martin Nelson, who initially found my work and contacted me to publish with Writer’s Forum.

Thanks Martin for this opportunity.

A Delightful Mention of My Poem “Gem and Gem Collectors”

A blogger just made a praise-worthy mention of my poem “Gem and Gem Collectors” on his blog. It’s kind of neat. He commented that my poem inspired him to hold a poetry contest. I wonder how that would go! Neat.

Collecting as Artistic Inspiration

Today I came across a unique expression of interest and appreciation for collecting. A poet known as Cercatore publishes a blog with her poetry, and the latest seems to draw its inspiration from collecting gems.
